Make a Difference this World Refugee Day with Save the Children

On June 20, 2023, World Refugee Day will mark the 72nd anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. World Refugee Day celebrates the strength, determination and resilience of refugees around the world. It also brings attention to the dire struggle refugees face daily, and what can be done to help them.

Half of the world's refugees are children.

Rising numbers of children around the world continue to be displaced from their homes due to conflict, climate and other crises. Since 1919, Save the Children has served refugee and displaced children, working around the clock to provide them with lifesaving aid, access to education, quality health care and protection from harm.

426 million children live in conflict zones across the world. New waves of violence or protracted conflict are contributing to this unprecedented global refugee crisis.

Additionally, the number of climate-related disasters have tripled over the last three decades. Children born in 2020 will experience many more extreme events during their lifetime, compared to people born in 1960: 2.8x crop failure, 2.6x drought and 2.6x wildfires.

MoneyGram and its employees have supported Children's Emergency Fund since 2016.

The Children's Emergency Fund is critical to ensuring that children and families fleeing crisis receive humanitarian assistance where and when it is needed most. In 2022, we contributed to reaching over 24.4 million people across 62 countries through the Children's Emergency Fund.

In 2023, 339 million people will need humanitarian assistance, a nearly 24% increase from the previous year.

The war in Ukraine has forced two-thirds of the children in Ukraine to flee their homes. With support from MoneyGram and its employees, Save the Children's humanitarian efforts reached over 1 million people across Ukraine, Poland, Romania and Lithuania in the first year of its response. From the outset of the conflict, the Children's Emergency Fund was deployed immediately to assist families in the country.

Refugees from countries like Venezuela, Myanmar, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Afghanistan have all been assisted through the Children's Emergency Fund.

This World Refugee Day, we want to honor the resiliency of refugees, raise the awareness of their plight and celebrate the impact of the Children's Emergency Fund.
