Each year on June 16, we honor the people who uplift their families around the world. International Day of Family Remittances is a universally recognized observance adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. It honors the hard work and sacrifice of the millions of migrants who support their family members and communities of origin through remittances.
When you can't be there physically, you show up in ways that make a difference. We know that a money transfer back home is more than a transaction—it’s a connection and show of love. At MoneyGram, we're grateful to be a part of this story and provide families with a way to connect without borders or barriers.
According to the United Nations, over $5 trillion of remittances have been sent over the last decade. It's estimated that an additional $4.4 trillion in remittances will go to families by 2030.1
Mothers, fathers, daughters, uncles, cousins and many others globally improve the lives of the loved ones they send money to. We spoke to a few MoneyGram customers to hear their stories and impact firsthand.
Irfan, who sends money to extended family in Pakistan when they are in need:
"If somebody's family member or a friend is really in distress and needs some kind of financial help, whichever I can do, and I can just do it from my bedroom, from my office space."
Kurtis, continuing his father's tradition of sending remittances to Jamaica:
"I've always had interactions with MoneyGram, you know, on the receiving end. My dad was overseas for quite some time. So, he usually sends remittances back home. But now I'm here. I'm actually creating my own platform where I'm actually sending back home now."
Basam, a business owner using MoneyGram to celebrate with loved ones across the world:
"MoneyGram services really helped me to be there for my family whenever I wasn't there, like physically. For instance, there were some special celebrations from my family, like a birthday or a ceremony, and MoneyGram really helped me to be there and show my support for my family."
